A Black Sense of Place: A Cartographic Conversation with Katherine McKittrick, with Christine Vogt-William and Stefan Ouma

This keynote conversation took place between Black feminist geographer Katherine McKittrick (Queen’s University, Canada), economic geographer Stefan Ouma (University of Bayreuth, Germany) and literary and cultural studies scholar Christine Vogt-William (University of Bayreuth, Germany) at the 2023 annual conference of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth.i,ii The conversation took Professor McKittrick’s highly acclaimed book, Dear Science and Other Stories (2021) as its point of departure at a time when other prominent scholars had also called for productive encounters between African Studies and Black Studies (e.g., Daley and Murrey 2022). McKittrick, Ouma, and Vogt-William are invested in mapping out reflections applicable to the transdisciplinary field of African Studies. The term “field” reflects the spatial nature of African Studies as comprising a plethora of knowledge production sites with epistemic perspectives from geopolitical and geophysical locations on the African continent and its diverse diasporas, challenging the colonial origins and hegemonic modes of knowledge production.
